José Luis Correa is a young Colombian pianist. He started his musical career at an early age at University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia where he earned his Bachelor’s in Piano Performance under the guidance of Teresita Gómez. In 2012, Correa was awarded the "Meadows Artistic Scholarship 2012-2014" to pursue a Performer’s Diploma in Piano at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX where he studied with the recognized Spanish artist Joaquín Achúcarro. In addition, he decided to start studying early music and harpsichord with the organist and harpsichordist Dr. Larry Palmer at the same university.
Correa has been part of the Young Talent Program at the III International Classical Music Festival of Cartagena and has participated at the Young Performers Series (2010) organized by the Luis Ángel Arango Library of the Bank of the Republic of Colombia.
Correa was awarded a grant from the 2008 Mazda Foundation for Art and Science, a scholarship that sponsored and encouraged higher education in music studies at the University of Antioquia. In 2010, he participated in the VI María Clara Cullell International Piano Competition in San José, Costa Rica,where he obtained a honorable mention. In addition, he was awarded a honorable mention at the XIII National Piano Competition of the Industrial University in Santander, Colombia.
José Luis has been part of the staff pianists at Southern Methodist University and University of Antioquia. He is currently piano faculty at the Antioquia Symphony School and maintains an active concert career in South America for both, piano and harpsichord, where he has been praised by the Semana Magazine as “the new opportunity to say with pride: He is Colombian!”
